Communication is the key to divorce mediation

Divorce mediation is much different than litigation. Instead of going to court and having a judge rule on what you and your spouse should do after your marriage ends, you both sit down with a mediator. You are then able to propose ideas and seek compromises, and the mediator provides legal guidance, and then the court will sign off on it.

When this works, it can make divorce a lot faster and easier for all involved. It can reduce stress and make the process go smoothly. One key to using mediation successfully is to focus on communication.

Tips for communicating with your ex

Naturally, couples sometimes struggle to communicate well when they’re in the midst of ending a relationship. It can be difficult and challenging emotionally. Here are a few tips that may help you keep things in perspective so that you can communicate seamlessly and get the results that you’re looking for:

  • Focus on a common goal. For many couples, this means putting the children’s best interests first.
  • Choose a mode of communication that works well for you. For instance, some couples are able to communicate through text better than they can in person.
  • Try to keep emotions out of it. As much as possible, just focus on the facts and details.
  • Think about your tone. It’s not just what you say, but how you say it.
  • Remember that you’ll need to compromise. You may have to give something to get something.

These are just a few tips that can help, but keep them in mind as you look into all of your legal options to end your marriage.
